Wacky Wednesday

Here at OLP, today was "Wacky Wednesday", and boy did we have a CRAZY day!!!  First, all of the teachers played a joke on the students by switching which class they would be teaching...so the "new" First Grade teacher was: MRS. KELLY!!!!  The students came into the class to not only find a "new" teacher, but that there were 18 wacky things different in the classroom.  The first "assignment" of the day, was to find something that was "wacky" and put a post-it on it...Juliana figured Mrs. Kelly as the last wacky thing in the class...too funny!!!!

  Our best "Dr. Seuss" characters...HYS.TER.I.CAL!!!!

We used Dr. Seuss' "Mr. Brown can MOO! Can you?" to learn all about ONOMATOPOEIA.  We listed all of the "sound words" that Dr. Seuss used in the book on an anchor chart.  Then, we created our own sentence using one ONOMATOPOEIA word:

We also used Dr. Seuss' book "Green Eggs and Ham" to review what we have learned about CONTRACTIONS.  We created an anchor chart of contraction words that we found in the book.  We also completed a contraction match of green eggs and ham.  Then, the students had to come up with an idea of a food that they WOULDN'T eat.  We wrote and illustrated a book based on that wacky food combination...some funny combinations were:
purple tuna, yellow snow (lol), blue rice, pink tomatoes, blue fish...just to name a few!!!!

It was a WACKY, FUN-FILLED day!!!

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

Today, here in First Grade at OLP we continued our Dr. Seuss celebration with three more Dr. Seuss books:

We used Dr. Seuss's book "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" to see how Dr. Suess used many different ANTONYMS in his writing. We created an anchor chart and listed the ANTONYMS that we found while reading:

Then, we each received a cup of colored goldfish and graphed the colors...we then created number sentences based on our graph:

We also enjoyed "Dr. Seuss Blue Fish Goo" LOL...blue jello with gummy fish!!! :)

We also added all the book stickers that we have read to our "Dr. Seuss Passport":
Finally, we had a special guest reader come read to the students...Mrs. Sawicki...she is a former Kindergarten teacher who taught here at OLP!!!!

Next up....WACKY WEDNESDAY!!!

Dr. Seuss Week Has Begun!!! Crazy Sock Day

Happy Dr. Seuss Week
Today was Crazy Sock Day here at OLP...and the First Graders had a great time showing off their socks!!!
Today, in honor of crazy sock day, we read "Fox in Socks"
We learned through this book, that Dr. Seuss liked to make many rhyming words.  We also saw through this book the example of ALLITERATION.  We created an anchor chart of what ALLITERATION was, and then we came up with our own examples using our names:

We also created Fox in Socks puppets:
Also, in math we worked on counting up on a 100s chart:

Happy Monday!!!!

And the winner is...

Celebrating President's Day all Week!!!

This week in First Grade, we studied all about Presidents.  We read many books on past Presidents, and learned how a President leads our country.
During the week, we also read three stories about characters who wanted to be President.

We created anchor charts based on the characters and what happened in each book:

Then, the students were able to experience what it feels like to vote...

We created "Voter Regristration Cards"
And used these cards to cast our ballot for who we think would make the best President.  The students were able to vote for either Duck, Grace or Teacher!!!

Example of the ballot:
Casting our VOTES!!!

"Verifying" our identity...Thanks for the help Mrs. Galanio!!!

After we voted, we designed our "I Voted" sticker:

AND THE WINNER IS....TEACHER!!! (Maybe one day...LOL)!!!!
Graphing our results...
We had such a fun and exciting week, and the students really enjoyed getting to vote...ask your child who they voted for!!!!
